Mustangs have long been regarded as a leader in the muscle car industry. They paved the way for other cars in the "pony class" and have busied car enthusiasts sense 1964. The company is transitioning into their Sixth Generation in 2015, so in honor of the new class, here is a look back at the top Mustangs of all time.
1965 Shelby GT 350
This purist sports car featured an improved handling and a reduced weight. The other memorable features include a fiberglass hood, a high performance exhaust system, and a powerful 289ci V8 engine from the Holley 4-barrell carburetor. In 1965, 562 Shelbys passed through the production lines; the cars were all white with two blue stripes.
1966 Shelby GT 350H
This car had its body painted black with golden stripes. The most outstanding feature was the cars automatic transmission. The car was popularly known as rent-a-racer car after it was adopted by Hertz for car rental purposes.
1967 Shelby GT 500
It featured a number of fiberglass materials that gave it its distinct appearance; included a new hood, functional side scoops, an extended front end with recessed grille, and a ducktail spoiler. Under the hood of the '67 Shelby GT500 was a 428 block V8 engine that produced 355 hp.
1968 Shelby GT 500KR
The '68 is practically the original King of the Hill. The greatest difference between the 1967 and KR model was in the design of the tail lights, rectangular driving lights on the grille, functional air ram, and revised rear bumper. In '68, a total of 1,251 Shelby GT500KRs were produced, among them were 381 convertibles and 933 fastbacks.
1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302
The pony era cars were very popular when this car was released. The car featured a few changes from the 1969 model, including the addition of iconic C-strip and the removal of the fake fender scoops on the rear wheel. The car used a composite Ford Windsor engine fitted with Cleveland heads.
1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1
The restyled 1971 Mustang seemed very modern for its age. The car grew in size over time and strayed from its original design. It was fitted with a 7.0 block engine; its most outstanding features include the 2-tone paint scheme, NACA ducts, and the popular amber sports lights on the grille.
1984 Ford Mustang SVO
This old sporting car stands out among the great family of Mustang cars. The car featured a turbo charged 4-cylinder engine with 175-horsepower and an intercooler designed under Fords Special Vehicle Operations tuning. Although the SVO did standout at the time, the car ran on a properly tuned 2.3 liter 4-cylinder engine in the era of V8.
1987 Ford Mustang 5.0
This Fox bodied Mustang has had many design changes. The outstanding features include the stealthy LX trim, a refreshed outside wrapper and a 302cid V8 engine with 225 horsepower.
1994 Ford Mustang
The 1994 Mustang was the first major Mustang makeover in 15 years. The makeover gained car world wide acceptance after it was featured in the short-lived popular TV series “RoboCop."
2005 Ford Mustang
The car featured a retro-wave design which was unique. The most outstanding features in this car are its potent engine and live rear axle. The car is also interesting to drive as it ushered in the new mustang tuning era.
