The 10 Coolest American Muscle Cars Of All Time

The 10 Coolest American Muscle Cars Of All Time

First thing first, let’s be honest, most of the coolest muscle cars were born in the ’60s and that is definitely reflected here. Second, this list isn’t all about top speed, 0-60 times or shear horsepower, though those are all factors. Looks and that sort of undefinable “cool factor” play just as big a role in our rankings.

Another note: an honorable mention goes to the Corvette, which after a heated debate, we decided is really more a pure sports car, rather than a true muscle car.

10. 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone

This was Mercury’s attempt at a muscle car and while it didn’t last very long, only a few short years, they are quite collectible today and that’s because they are very cool.

9. 1970 Buick Gran Sport

This monster from Buick kicked out 360 bhp and looked incredible. It’s too bad GM messed up this brand too.

8. The 1969 Ford Torino GT

The Torino/Fairlane platform was the base for a lot Ford’s cars in the late ’60s, but the coolest, by far, was the Torino GT.

7. 1966 Plymouth Barracuda

The car just looked quick. And it WAS quick. Plymouth’s entry on the list looks the sportiest of them all and man was it cool that wrap-around glass!

6. Oldsmobile 442

The Oldsmobile 442 is kind of forgotten, because the brand is gone and, let’s be honest, the brand is not exactly known for being “cool.” But the 442 was definitely very cool.

5. 1971 Chevy Camaro

Famously introduced to compete with Ford’s Mustang, it never quite reached the mythical status of the Mustang, but by its second generation, it was a legend in its own right.

4. 1964 Pontiac GTO

Arguably the one that started it all. The GTO. 4 of the floor and a rumble that shook buildings. Even The Beach Boys loved ’em!

3. 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454

Chevy messed up as many great cars as they designed and sadly, the Chevelle was one of them, but in that glorious year of 1970, they sure built an awesome one.

2. 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

Fast as anything and scary looking, these monsters are tough to beat. They are definitely driven by people not to be trifled with.

1. 1968 Mustang GT

If its use in Bullitt and association with the coolest of the cool, Steve McQueen, isn’t enough, it is also the most identifiable design by the coolest car designer in the world, Carol Shelby.
