Kids do some really stupid stuff. Most of the time, it’s harmless and innocent, but still stupid — T.P. a house, jump off a roof into a pool, you know, the standard high school hijinks.
They also love to record themselves doing that stupid stuff. Sometimes you might be repulsed, or you might sometimes burst out in laughter when you see the videos. But when you watch the video of 16-year-old Nicholas Kyle Hoffman plowing his car into another teenager, there is nothing funny about it. It is shocking and it is disturbing. Miraculously, the victim was not killed. But that didn’t stop the judge from throwing the book at Hoffman, sentencing him to 25 years in the state pen after he was convicted of attempted murder.
It wasn’t a run of the mill teenage dispute either.
Hoffman, a 17-year-old from Maryland at the time of the crime, believed that the victim, who as 16, had stolen marijuana from Hoffman’s friend and Hoffman, in his brilliant teenage mind, decided he would use his car as a weapon and try to kill the other kid.
An unidentified female filmed the whole thing. Whether she knew about what was going to happen is unclear from reports, but she sounds very upset after the attack as Hoffman drives away while muttering “[F—] him.” She gasps in disbelief, repeating “Nick” a few times.
Hoffman was convicted in August and sentenced this week. The Maryland State’s Attorney Wes Adams called it “one of the most callous displays of violence” he had ever seen.
